The
Georgian building on Friday Market Place, now known as "Elmham
House"
was formerly home of Walsingham Grammar School, established in
1639. It was established by Richard Bond, Esq "for the education
in Classics and English subjects of fourteen (male) foundation
scholars." It was only in 1905, however, that a Girls' school
was founded. Elmham House
itself is a listed building with many original features
intact.
The Entrance Hall and adjacent library and lounge all
display original oak panelling.
In
1986, the main listed building was extended primarily to
provide
accommodation and amenities for visitors with special access
requirements. The facilities now include specially adapted
toilets,
bathrooms and shower rooms, as well as a lift to the first floor
and a large dining room.
Further
modifications were made in 1994, when a conservatory was added,
including a licensed bar from which you can buy light snacks and
drinks throughout the day.
The
conservatory overlooks a large private garden which has
tables
and seating, some of which have been donated in memory of past
visitors.
In 1994 two annexe buildings were purchased and named St
Joseph's and St Anne's. These have been developed into
further standard rooms, and
also some
en suite rooms for people who wish to stay a little
longer. These
en suite rooms are on the ground floor (with the
exception
of one single room) in St. Anne's and have shower rooms, colour
television and tea/coffee making facilities.
The
ground floor of St Joseph's is now a Common Room
which can seat up to sixty people and can be used
for
social activities, retreats, meetings and seminars etc. The television in the Common Room has access to the EWTN network.
